ISO 50001 is an international standard for energy management systems. It sets out the requirements for the systematic development, operation, and continual improvement of an organisation’s energy management and is internationally recognised. The aim is to capture energy consumption in a structured way, set savings targets, and review results on a regular basis. For companies that fall under the German Energy Efficiency Act (Energieeffizienzgesetz, EnEfG), it is one of the recognised routes for demonstrating a management system.
What is ISO 50001?
ISO 50001 describes how an organisation sets up its energy management in a structured way and improves it on an ongoing basis. At its core, it is about systematically capturing energy consumption, setting targets, implementing measures, and reviewing their effectiveness. The standard does not prescribe specific technologies but rather a management framework that can be applied to organisations of different sizes and sectors.
How does the PDCA cycle work in ISO 50001?
ISO 50001 follows the principle of continual improvement, known as the PDCA cycle:
- Plan: analyse energy consumption, establish the baseline, and set targets.
- Do: implement the planned measures to improve energy efficiency.
- Check: measure the results and compare them against the targets.
- Act: adjust on the basis of the findings and run through the cycle again.
What are the benefits of ISO 50001 certification?
Certification creates transparency over energy consumption and systematically uncovers savings potential. It can also be a prerequisite for certain tax relief measures and serves as evidence for customers, partners, and authorities. For many organisations, it is therefore both a commercial and a regulatory instrument.
Who should consider ISO 50001?
The standard is mandatory, or at least strongly advisable, above all for organisations that fall under the Energy Efficiency Act and must operate a certified management system above a certain consumption threshold. Beyond that, it is worthwhile for energy-intensive operations, for organisations with multiple sites, and for anyone looking to claim tax relief that may be tied to certification.
Even without a legal obligation, building a management system can pay off because it systematically reduces energy consumption and documents results in a traceable way. For smaller organisations with no statutory requirement, it is worth weighing up whether the effort of certification is proportionate to the benefit, or whether structured monitoring without formal certification is sufficient for the time being.
How does ISO 50001 relate to the EnEfG?
The Energy Efficiency Act obliges companies above a certain consumption threshold to introduce a management system. ISO 50001 is one of the two recognised forms with which this obligation can be fulfilled. The other is the environmental management system EMAS. The foundation for both is a functioning energy monitoring system that provides the necessary data. Anyone already building up energy monitoring is laying the groundwork for a later ISO 50001 certification at the same time.
What does ISO 50001 have to do with the GModG?
ISO 50001 requires certified organisations to comply with the relevant energy legislation. Any organisation certified under this standard that operates a building above the new 70 kW threshold must fulfil the automation obligation under Section 56 GModG (Gebäudemodernisierungsgesetz, engl: Buildings Modernisation Act); otherwise, the conformity of its management system may be called into question. With the threshold lowered to 70 kW, significantly more office, administrative, and commercial buildings as well as schools now fall within this scope than before.
How does ISO 50001 certification work in practice?
The certification process starts with a stocktake of energy consumption, for which energy monitoring provides the data. The management system is then built on this foundation, complete with targets, responsibilities, and documented procedures. Following an internal review, an independent certification body assesses the system in an audit. If the audit is successful, the certificate is issued and subsequently confirmed through regular surveillance audits and a later recertification.
The precise requirements and deadlines are set out in the standard; the specific details are to be agreed with the certification body. The effort involved depends heavily on how good the data foundation is at the outset. Where energy monitoring is already in place, preparation time is significantly shorter because the required consumption data does not first have to be painstakingly compiled.
